The local zoning encourages detached apartments for rentals to an unrelated short-term tenant. It is called an ADU in the development ordinance, for Accessory Dwelling Unit. In neighborhoods where there is resistance to temporary residents on the same property as a principal home it may be politically correct to refer to this detached efficiency home as an In Law Suite.
