A Private Apartment Over Your Garage

Adding small apartments to existing homes is becoming popular. 

Do you need to create a space for an adult family member? Or perhaps you are looking for some rental income? Many personal reasons may lead you to the same solution: a private apartment over your existing garage, or building a garage that includes an additional dwelling.

These apartments are referred to as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in the architectural lingo, but you and I both know this is just a private apartment or carriage house.

For efficiency these homes will make use of the water and energy connections from your primary house. Lots of communities allow you to build a stand alone unit, such as a detached garage or guest house. Some cities have zoning restrictions on these structures.
